Vanna White is an American icon
and a much beloved television personality who is best known
for her role as hostess and letter-turner on Wheel of Fortune.
After growing up in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Vanna
attended the Atlanta School of Fashion Design and worked as a
model, moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
Her first appearance on the daytime version of Wheel aired on
December 13, 1982. She won the role by being selected by Merv
Griffin from over 200 finalists because of her all-American
good looks plus the on-air chemistry between White and her
costar, Pat Sajak.
In 1992 Vanna was recognized by The Guinness Book of World
Records as “Television’s Most Frequent Clapper,”
averaging 720 claps per episode. She has a great sense of
humor about turning the letters on the show. On a recent radio
interview, she said that the game board was changed so that it
requires only touching, rather than turning, after the
producers of the show asked if there was any way they could
make her job easier.
In 2006 she was awarded her own star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame. As Wheel of Fortune celebrated a 25th anniversary in
2008, it is seen by over 40 million people weekly. Her love of
fashion is satisfied by having worn over 5,100 different
designer outfits
Vanna White and Lion Brand® have enjoyed a business association
and friendship since 1985 when a member of the family that
owns the company saw her on the Tonight Show starring Johnny
Carson. She spoke of her love of crochet and Lion Brand sent
her a basket of yarn and asked if she would like to work with
the company. She responded “yes”, saying that Jiffy yarn
was her favorite yarn.
Over the last 14 years, Vanna has hosted the annual Lion Brand
fashion show at the Craft and Hobby Association convention and
published many books of patterns using Lion Brand yarns
including three books featuring her own yarn, Vanna's Choice.
